BIO/ Ido Ziv:

Originally from Israel, Ido was inspired by the drum and rhythm at the age of 9, studying drum set and playing in the school orchestra. As time went on, he became engaged in traditional and folkloric styles. His journey has taken him to various parts of the world to play and study with master musicians from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cuba, Brazil and Trinidad. His style and musical voice draws from these traditions and can be heard within jazz, funk, rock and Latin styles.

He has performed with and accompanied dance with members and former members of Les Ballet du Senegal, Los Monuquios de Mantanzas/Grupo Afro-Cuba, Mali troupes including Troupe Sewa and Eskesta Dance Company from Ethiopia & Israel.

Currently, his interest lies not only within the music, but also in, the understanding of the context in which the music manifests itself; how it can transform, describe, record, and change culture. This global sound not only brings artists, musicians and listeners together from all corners of the world, but also brings our global awareness closer together. Ido's music taps into the power of music to create change, promote tolerance and nourish an understanding of our humanity through performance.

CD Release: About “Assiya”

“ASSIYA,” Ido's second CD release, features special guest musicians from around the world, including vocalist M'mah Doumbouya from Guinea, world class Brazilian guitarist Ari Mendes, Celtic multi-instrumentalist Brian McCoy, Yacouba Sissoko on Kora and John Wubbenhorst on Bansuri. This project grew over a period of three years, completing a vision of bringing world genres, international musical sensibilities and esthetics together in a contemporary format, while staying true to the traditions of origin. The traditions are integrated here, sharing a common form - a common language, a common idea - with a heavy percussive thread that ties it all together.

Inspired by music from Africa and Caribbean, Indian ragas, Celtic jigs and reels, and artist like Trilok Gurtu, Afro-Celt Sound System, Santana, David Byrne and Paul Simon to name a few, this music is driven by rich rhythmic textures, weaving polyrhythmic grooves, deep percussive flavors, while tapping into a jazzy ethnic sound. Colorful melodies and grooves are drawn from folkloric and contemporary Afro-Cuban, African, Brazilian rhythms with MIDI percussion and electronic elements.

Ido's intention is that perhaps upon hearing this type of cooperation and synergy that we may be inspired to reach out, find what makes us more alike than different; to find our common sound, our common song, our common humanity.
